September 16 - Mexican Independence Day... The holiday commemorates the 1910 revolution, which ended dictorship. Festivities in mexico begin at midnigt on the day of the holiday. In villages, towns and cities all over Mexico, the people gather at the "zocola" or public square with mexico's national colors - red, white and green banners hunging from buildings and lights are strung from street posts. Bands play, people throw confetti and wave flags. At midnight the President or local official reads "Grito de Dolores" of Father Hidalgo, first presented in 1810 ( Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla) the organizer and principal leader of the rebellion against the Spaniards. The people chant the "Grito" after the president. He rings the Indepence bell, signalling the fireworks display, dancing and singing.
