PRETTY in PINK A brief summary of the breast Cancer Awareness Pink Ribbon: "Pink is the quinntessential female color," says Margaret Welch, director of the Color Association of the United States. "The profile on pink is playful, life-affirming. We have studies as to its calmming effect, its quieting effect, its lessening of stress. Pastel Pink is a shade known to be health-giving; that's why we have expressions like 'in the pink'. You can't say a bad thing about it." Pink is, in other words, everything cancer notably is not. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! In May of 1985, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington was moved to raise money for the local American Cancer Society's tm treasury. Determined to do something he enjoyed to increase awareness and funding, Dr. Gordy Klatt began running marathons. The first year, Dr. Klatt spent 24 hours circling the track at the University of Puget Sound. Friends paid $25.00 to join him for 30 minutes. In all, he raised $27,000.00 to fight cancer. With 24 hours to think, Dr. Klatt was able to outline a plan for a team relay to fund research.
Twenty-one years later, American Cancer Relay for Life ® teams congregate throughout hte world. Teams gather overnight at schools, fairgrounds and parks to alternate time on a track and celebrate survivors, the newly diagnosed, caregivers and friends, as well as those who lost their battle with the the disease.
Please consider joining a local Relay for Life ® team and support the research and programs of the American Cancer Society ®.
